Abstract

This book looks at the history of the EU's trade negotiations with China from 1975 to 2019 from a distinctive perspective the EU as a linkage power. The author explains how the EU through linkage strategies speaks with one voice, overcomes its weakness in military capabilities and translates its non-military capabilities into advantages and influences in some specific policy areas. The book systematically traces the European negotiators' tactics in managing the EU's trade relations with China. It's the first time that the history of EU-China trade negotiations is presented to the public by a seasoned trade negotiator. The author, combining the identities of a negotiator and a scholar, gives a panoramic view of EU-China trade relations from 1975, when the European Economic Community established diplomatic relations with China, to 2019 when the Juncker Commission leaves office. This book will appeal to policymakers, think-tankers, professors and students, as well as anyone who is interested in trade policies and negotiations in the EU and China. Abstract

This open access book examines the relationship between trade and women’s economic empowerment by focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in six countries: Cambodia, Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria, Senegal and Vietnam. The authors make use of both survey data and qualitative analysis to understand why and how trade can create more jobs for women, and how the jobs created are contributing to women’s empowerment. They propose strategies and policies for ensuring that women can benefit from trade. After providing the context for the research and reviewing the literature on trade and gender in the introductory chapter, the second chapter analyzes survey data collected for this project. This is followed by a qualitative analysis of the six country cases in the next two chapters: Cambodia and Vietnam (Chapter 3), followed by Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria and Senegal (Chapter 4). The final chapter concludes with a summary of our findings and policy recommendations. Abstract

This book advances North Atlantic Treaty Organization (henceforth, NATO) burden analysis through a decomposition of the political, financial, social, and defense burdens members take on for the institution. The overemphasis of committing a minimum of 2% of member state Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense spending, as a proxy indicator of alliance commitment does not properly reflect how commitments reduce risks should Article V be invoked through attack (i.e., 2% is a political & symbolic target adopted by Defense Ministers in 2006 at Riga). Considering defense burdens multi-dimensionally explains why some members overcontribute, as well as, why burden sharing negotiations cause friction among 30 diverse members with differing threats and risks. In creating a comprehensive institutional burden management model and focusing on risks to members, the book explores the weaknesses of major theories on the study and division of collective burdens and institutional assets. It argues that member risks and threats are essential to understanding how burdens are distributed across a set of overlapping institutions within NATO’s structure providing its central goods. The importance of the USA, as a defense underwriter for some, affects negotiations despite its absence from research empirically; new data permit testing the argument (Kavanaugh 2014). This book contributes conceptual innovation and theoretical analysis to advance student, researcher, and policymaker understanding of burden management, strategic bargaining, and defense cooperation. The contribution is a generalizable risk management model of IO burden sharing using NATO as the case for scientific study due to its prominence. Anessa L. Kimball is Director of the Center for International Security at the École supérieur D’études Internationales and Professor in the Department of Political Science at Université Laval, Québec City. Abstract

The book considers the impact of COVID-19 on the GCC member states through the prism of challenges faced by their hydrocarbon sector. Yet, the publication’s discourse is not solely focused on the problems experienced by the oil and gas industries of the GCC member states after the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Instead, the contributors will analyze how these challenges and subsequent response to them affected other aspects of the GCC socio-economic and political development, from direct impact of the COVID on the energy sector of the GCC to socio-economic consequences of the oil market crisis for the region and its potential fallouts for the international relations of the Gulf. Nikolay Kozhanov is a Research Associate Professor at the Gulf Studies Center of Qatar University. He is also a Non-Resident Scholar at the Program on Economics and Energy at the Middle East Institute. Abstract

This book presents a systemic view of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change from the positions of Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose of the book is to study the current problems of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change and to determine the prospects of its sustainable development (systemic support for the SDGs). This goal predetermines the logic and structure of the book, which is comprised of five parts. Part I presents the authors’ novel view of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change from the positions of the SDGs. It reflects the contradiction and describes the path of preserving economic growth during the implementation of SDG 13. The COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis are considered as the result of the reduction of biodiversity under the conditions of climate change from the positions of SDG 3. Responsible innovations, eco-friendly products, and green trade are presented as trends of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change to support SDG 12. Green jobs are analyzed in the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change during the implementation of SDG 8. The significance of social inclusivity and reduction of the inequality of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change to support SDG 10 is noted. Part II elaborates on the sectoral specifics of the influence of climate change on the environmental economy: energetics, finance, industry, state management, and agriculture. Part III presents and discusses the international experience of development of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change given the specifics of developed and developing countries and based on the case experience of Central Asia, the EAEU, and Russia. In Part IV, technological transition (Fourth Industrial Revolution) is offered as a perspective response of the global economic policy to climate change. Scenarios of the fight against climate change in the Decade of Action depending on the scale of the technological transition are described: digital economy vs Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. The perspectives of the technological transition at the level of companies (creation of cyber-physical systems of Industry 4.0; green digital innovations and smart ESG finance) and regions (smart region as a socio-economic environment with large adaptability to climate change) are described.

Abstract

This book introduces a new economic and financial system to replace the flawed current system. The past financial crises, including the Great Depression, the Global Financial Crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, have showed us that the global financial system has problems and that a paradigm change and mindset shift to provide a better world to society is essential. This book brings a new sustainable approach to replace the current system and will be of interest to academics, policymakers, and professionals working with financial markets, financial economics, sustainability, and impact finance. Levent Sümer is the Founder and the Chairman of SMR Strategy, an international investment and management consultancy company. Abstract

“This book is a must read to understand the pitfalls of relying solely on financial innovation to solve the climate crisis.” (Matthew Paterson, University of Manchester) “…an emphatic call for rethinking finance to advance a just energy transition” Mzukisi Qobo, Wits University) "A truly enlightening and empirically rich account of a green bond market that wasn't...." (Daniel Mertens, University Osnabrück) “…required reading for scholars of just transitions in the Global South.” (Daniela Gabor, UWE Bristol) Funding low-carbon transitions to address climate change is one of the major challenges of our time. Green bonds have emerged as a powerful tool to enlist institutional investors’ wealth for these transitions. But despite exponential growth in many parts of the world, the green bond market in South Africa has been stalling. This book grapples with this puzzle: It debunks some of the promises underpinning green bond markets globally and traces the manifold practices undergirding its promotion. It then identifies some barriers prohibiting the expansion of green bonds in emerging markets and zooms in on the depoliticizing tendencies a transition premised on financial innovation produces. In the last part, this work discloses the idiosyncratic political economic challenges of a fossil-based economy in transition and shines a light on the competing elements of a ‘green’ and a ‘just’ transition. In so doing, this book contributes important new qualitative insights into green bond markets-in-the-making and extends political economic scholarship on finance-led transition endeavors in emerging economies. Chapters 3 and 6 is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com. Manuel Neumann is a Senior Policy Officer at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. He did his PhD at Kassel University and was a visiting scholar at Wits University in Johannesburg in 2018 and 2019. Beforehand, he worked in the development context in Geneva and Kathmandu and studied in London (M.Sc.), New Delhi, and Tübingen (B.Sc.). His research revolves around green financial innovation and the political economy of energy transitions in the global South.

Abstract

In his wonderfully researched and tightly argued book, Michael Schedelik explains why the Brazilian development strategy of significantly raising the level of technological development in order to be less dependent on raw material exports was not successful. A must-read for students of innovation processes in emerging economies for many years to come. Andreas Nölke, Professor of Political Science, Goethe University Frankfurt Innovation in Brazil has been a topic of extensive research, but rarely before Michael Schedelik’s book has it been done as comprehensively with such a wealth of empirical evidence. Ben Ross Schneider, Ford International Professor of Political Science and Director of the MIT-Brazil Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology This is a path breaking contribution to the study of comparative political economy of development in emerging economies. It is a provocative must read for those who strive to avoid simplistic structural and facile political explanations of upgrading development. Antonio José Junqueira Botelho, Professor of Comparative Political Economy, IUPERJ Universidade Candido Mendes, Rio de Janeiro Today’s middle-income countries tend to be locked in a middle-income trap, unable to transition to higher income levels due to rising costs and declining competitiveness. While there is a broad consensus that upgrading these economies towards innovation-led growth is imperative, countless institutional and political economy obstacles remain. This book brings together analytical perspectives from comparative political economy, innovation studies, and development economics for the study of technological upgrading. Its distinctive contribution is the development of an innovative theoretical framework, named upgrading regimes, combining and extending the comparative capitalism and innovation system perspectives. It explores the usefulness of this approach by providing an indepth assessment of the political economy of upgrading in Brazil under the Workers’ Party governments. As the politics of technological upgrading will be one of the crucial research areas in the years to come, this book promises to become a key reference point in this debate. Michael Schedelik is Lecturer and Research Associate at the Institute of Political Science at Goethe University Frankfurt. His research focuses on the politics of growth and innovation in developing and emerging economies.

Abstract

This book provides a history of Swiss banking not confined to stereotypical opinions about secret numbered accounts. Instead, the presented history covers other intriguing events and developments beyond the famous issue of banking secrecy and the corresponding scandals. Topics covered in the book include the early financial innovations by banks in Geneva to handle the sovereign risk on bonds issued in pre-revolutionary France, the monetary chaos that led to the creation of the Swiss franc, the rather peculiar banknote competition and free-banking system in Switzerland during most of the nineteenth century, how the country and its currency became a financial safe haven after World War I, the golden age of Swiss banking when Zurich was briefly one of the largest financial centres in the world, and the exceptional shocks during and after the recent global financial crisis. In sum, a fascinating story emerges about an internationally important banking centre in one of the most unlikely places in the world. This book is a must-read for students, scholars, and researchers of economics and finance, as well as practitioners interested in a better understanding of economic history in general, and Swiss banking in particular. .
